इस संबंध में यूक्रेन और उनके अधिकारियों का कहना है कि उनकी सेना ने नेप्चून मिसाइल का इस्तेमाल करके रूस के इस जंगी पराक्रमी जहाज मोस्कवा को तबाह किया है। वहीं इस पर रूस का कहना है कि किलर मिसाइलों से लैस इस युद्धपोत में आग लगने के चलते इस जहाज पर रखे गोला-बारूदों में विस्फोट हो गया था। उसने यह भी बताया है कि मोस्कवा के पूरे चालक दल को विस्फोट होने के बाद वहां से निकाला गया। चालक दल को काला सागर में ही मौजूद अन्य रूसी जहाजों में ले जाया गया। रूस ने कहा कि उसपर कोई हमला नहीं हुआ।
बताया जा रहा है कि 186 मीटर लंबा और 510 चालक दल वाला ये मिसाइल क्रूज़र रूस की सैन्य शक्ति का अहम प्रतीक था। यूक्रेन के ख़िलाफ़ समुद्र के रास्ते हमले का नेतृत्व यही युद्धपोत नेतृत्व कर रहा था।
