भूकंप के तुरंत बाद हवाई स्थित पैसिफिक सुनामी वार्निंग सेंटर (PTWC) ने 1000 किलोमीटर तक के तटीय इलाकों—इंडोनेशिया, फिलीपींस और मलेशिया—में सुनामी की आशंका जताई थी। कुछ जगहों पर 75 सेंटीमीटर तक ऊंची लहरें भी दर्ज की गईं।
हालांकि, करीब दो घंटे बाद अधिकारियों ने स्पष्ट किया कि अब सुनामी का खतरा टल गया है और चेतावनी वापस ले ली गई है।
इंडोनेशिया की मौसम और भूभौतिकी एजेंसी (BMKG) ने बताया कि भूकंप के बाद 11 आफ्टरशॉक्स आए, जिनमें सबसे तेज 5.5 तीव्रता का था। राहत की बात यह रही कि मनाडो में बड़े स्तर पर कोई भारी नुकसान सामने नहीं आया।
