दिग्गज हॉकी खिलाड़ी और हॉकी के जादूगर कहे जाने वाले मेजर ध्यानचंद की जयंती को खेल दिवस के रूप में मनाया जाता है। आज ही के दिन (29 अगस्त) को ही राष्ट्रीय खेल पुरस्कार भी दिए जाते हैं। कोरोना के कारण जहाँ इस बार राष्ट्रीय खेल पुरस्कार वर्चुअल तरीके से दिए गए वही ऐसा पहली बार हुआ, जब खेल दिवस के मौके पर राष्ट्रपति भवन में अवॉर्ड सेरेमनी नहीं हुई। राष्ट्रपति रामनाथ कोविंद ने इस साल अलग-अलग सात वर्गों में 74 खिलाड़ियों और कोच को पुरस्कार दिए वही इस साल पहली बार एक साथ पांच खिलाड़ियों को खेल रत्न भी मिला।
पीएम मोदी ने मेजर ध्यानचंद को दी श्रद्धांजलि
राष्ट्रीय खेल दिवस पर प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी ने मेजर ध्यानचंद को ट्वीट कर श्रद्धांजलि दी। पीएम ने ट्वीट किया, ‘आज राष्ट्रीय खेल दिवस पर, हम मेजर ध्यानचंद को श्रद्धांजलि देते हैं, जिनकी हॉकी स्टिक के साथ जादू को कभी नहीं भुलाया जा सकता। आज हमारे प्रतिभाशाली एथलीटों की सफलता के लिए परिवारों, कोचों और सहयोगी कर्मचारियों द्वारा दिए गए उत्कृष्ट समर्थन की सराहना करने का भी दिन है।’
